Algeria Won’t Relent In Demanding Palestine’s UN Membership

  • Ambassador Bendjama: "The State of Palestine deserves its rightful place among the members of the United Nations"

Algeria stressed that it will return stronger with the support of the General Assembly for the full membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations, describing this as its rightful place, after the American veto that failed to pass the decision to grant Palestine its full membership in the United Nations.

Ambassador Ammar Bendjama added in a speech after the American veto on the Algerian draft of the Security Council resolution recommending the acceptance of Palestine’s membership in the United Nations that Algeria will return to the Security Council for the sake of Palestine, stating, “We will return stronger and more vocal with the support of the legitimacy of the General Assembly and the broader support of the members of the United Nations.” “This is just another step on the road to full membership for Palestine.”

Ambassador Bendjama called on “those who were unable to support the admission of the State of Palestine today to do so next time,” as “the overwhelming support for the establishment of the State of Palestine sends a crystal clear message that the State of Palestine deserves its rightful place among the members of the United Nations.”

Algeria’s representative to the Security Council recalled the words of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, that “Algeria’s efforts will not stop until the State of Palestine becomes a full member of the United Nations,” and expressed his “deep” gratitude, on behalf of the Arab Group, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Non-Aligned Movement, to all those who voted in favor of the resolution presented by Algeria.

🔴 Permanent Representative of #Algeria 🇩🇿 to the #United_Nations #Ammar_Bendjame: “We will come back stronger with the support of the legitimacy of the General Assembly, and Palestine deserves its place among the members of the United Nations.”

Mr. Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, in his speech at the opening of the debate on the Algerian draft resolution, stressed the need to grant full membership to the State of Palestine in order to save the two-state solution and maintain peace, stability and security in the entire Middle East region.

Ahmed Attaf considered that “the magnitude of the danger that the Palestinian issue is experiencing today places this Council before a historic responsibility, a crucial responsibility, a decisive responsibility and a defining responsibility, which is the responsibility to move urgently to impose the two-state solution and preserve the foundations of the establishment of the Palestinian state, “stressing that “any delay or hesitation in the pursuit of this goal will have disastrous consequences, and in this particular circumstance it will serve as a green light to the Israeli occupation to continue implementing plans characterized by looting, plunder and expansion on the one hand, and extremism, exaggeration and intransigence on the other.

The minister pointed out that “Gaza has shown its exemplary steadfastness in the face of the Israeli occupier’s overt and covert aims and objectives, all of which come under the title of liquidating the Palestinian cause and undermining the authentic national project associated with it,” indicating that it is no longer a secret to anyone that the ongoing genocidal war is taking place in Gaza, the stranglehold imposed on the West Bank, the settlement policy, the annexation of Palestinian land and the Judaization of occupied Jerusalem, the campaigns of forced displacement of Palestinians, and last but not least, what has become known as the Israeli post-war arrangements for Gaza, are all additional stations and advanced stages of a broader and more comprehensive Israeli plan. And more dangerous.”

He went on to say: “It is a plan that aims to revive and embody the Greater Israel project in the context of eliminating the components of the Palestinian state, and in the context of the gradual demolition that affects its pillars and basic foundations,” citing a few months ago when an “Israeli official” waved from the podium of the General Assembly a map of the Middle East, a map drawn according to his fantasies and whims, a map in which Palestine had no trace or imprint.”

The minister continued: “Even the escalations that the Israeli occupation is currently trying to provoke on more than one front in the region, their purpose has become clear and obvious, which is to preoccupy the international community and divert its attention from the Palestinian issue, and to try to create new regional conflicts in the clutches of which the rights of the Palestinians will disappear and vanish In its wind are the embers of those who cling to achieving it.3

The United States used its veto power to prevent the adoption of a resolution that would open the door to granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations, in the project presented by Algeria, which “recommends to the General Assembly, composed of 193 countries, that the State of Palestine be admitted as a member of the United Nations”. The Algerian project was adopted. With the support of 12 members and two members abstaining: Great Britain and Switzerland.

The Palestinian presidency condemned the American move and said in a statement that the American veto is “unfair, immoral and unjustified” and reveals the contradictions of the American policy, which on the one hand claims to support the two-state solution and on the other hand prevents the international institution from implementing this solution, considering that the American position involves “aggression”. “The “strike” is pushing the region to the “brink of the abyss.
