In the UN Security Council on Thursday, the United States used its veto power to prevent the adoption of a resolution that would open the door to granting the state of Palestine full membership in the United Nations.

The draft resolution introduced by Algeria, which “recommends that the General Assembly accept the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations,” was supported by 12 members, opposed by the United States, and the remaining two members abstained.

On Thursday evening, the Palestinian Presidency strongly condemned the use of the veto by the United States of America in the UN Security Council to prevent the State of Palestine from becoming a full member of the United Nations.

The Palestinian Presidency affirmed that the American “veto” is unfair, immoral and unjustified and defies the will of the international community, which strongly supports the State of Palestine achieving full membership in the United Nations, as the majority of countries in the world have recognized a Palestinian state since 2012, when the United Nations General Assembly voted to upgrade Palestine’s status in the United Nations to that of an observer state.

The Palestinian presidency underscored that this aggressive American policy against Palestine, its people and its legitimate rights is a blatant aggression against international law and encourages the continuation of the Israeli genocidal war against our people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem, and pushes the region to the brink of the abyss in light of the continued Israeli occupation of the lands of the State of Palestine and the continuation of the policy of aggression and heinous war crimes under the auspices and support of the United States of America, which continues to use its “veto” against the rights of the Palestinian people.

The Israeli foreign minister said he praised the United States for using its veto power in the United Nations Security Council on Thursday to deprive the Palestinian Authority of full membership in the international organization. “The shameful proposal was rejected,” added Foreign Minister Israel Katz.
