Algeria: “Memory File Is Not Subject To Compromise”

  • President Tebboune: “The state’s interest in the issue of memory is based on appreciation of national responsibility in preserving the legacy of generations of the glories of their valiant ancestors”.

The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, stressed on Tuesday that the memory file will not be eroded by statute of limitations, will not accept concessions or compromise, and will remain at the heart of the state’s concerns until it is addressed in an objective, bold and fair treatment of the historical truth.

President Tebboune added, in a message he sent on the occasion of the National Day of Memory commemorating the 79th anniversary of the massacres of May 8, 1945, that celebrating this anniversary brings to mind the massacres that colonialism committed with the utmost hatred and brutality to quell the process of a rising tide of national struggle.

The President of the Republic stated that this tide of struggle led to massive angry demonstrations during which the Algerian people rose up at the time, expressing their aspiration for freedom and emancipation, and it was a loud announcement of the imminent outbreak of lofty armed struggle on November 1, 1954.

The President of the Republic underscored that the Algerian people created an epic scene in this immortal historical uprising in Setif, Guelma, Kherrata, Ain Temouchent and other Algerian cities. Colonialism was stunned and mad, and pushed them to commit crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity.

The head of state also affirmed that what happened that day was a terrible and horrific scene, embodying a pivotal historical moment that turned the struggles of the national movement and its record over decades towards the armed confrontation that was later led by men who grew up in the heart of the national struggle, so they sparked the liberation revolution, and threw it to the people for them to embrace it and engage On its great heroic path.

The President of the Republic added: “We have made the anniversary of the massacres of May 8, 1945, in which the people paid forty-five thousand martyrs with the blood of their children, a national day of memory, out of pride in the chapters of the national march full of struggles, generation after generation, since the feet of colonialism set foot on our pure land.”

The President of the Republic went on to say that the demonstrations of May 8 were one of the bloody stations recorded in modern history among the examples that express anti-colonialism and attachment to freedom and dignity, and one of the greatest examples in the world of the magnitude and depth of the sacrifices, blood, and tragedies incurred by the colonized peoples as a price for getting rid of injustice and domination, and restoring sovereignty and Nationalism.

President Tebboune explained that the state’s interest in the issue of memory is based on an appreciation of the national responsibility in preserving the legacy of generations of the glories of their ancestors, and stems from the nation’s pride in its honorable past, and from the magnitude of the people’s sacrifices in Algeria’s ancient and modern history to defeat ambitions and nullify the plots of haters who continue to inherit intentions. Undermining its unity and strength, and their lineages are still stained to this day in the mud of targeting our country.

The President of the Republic stressed that “the memory file will not be eroded by passage of time or forgotten due to the passage of years, and it does not accept concessions or compromises, and it will remain at the core of our concerns until it is addressed in an objective, bold and fair treatment of the historical truth.”

The President of the Republic further underlined that while he affirms the readiness to move towards the future in an atmosphere of trust, “I consider that credibility and seriousness are a basic requirement for completing the procedures and endeavors related to this delicate and sensitive file and what it represents to the Algerian people who are proud of their long national struggle, their bitter armed struggle, and their loyalty to the martyrs and to the eternal message of November.”

The President of the Republic concluded his message by saying, “As we celebrate this anniversary today as an expression of the glorification of our national history, and in consecration of the doctrine of loyalty to those who made it with rivers of blood, we stand with reverence for their huge sacrifices and compassion for their pure souls, to renew our covenant with them to preserve their trust and their memory and to continue on their path to a strong and invincible Algeria.”
